Locking YMCA
This was sent to me by Paul Tuffery
The Locking YMCA opened in 1959 and quickly became an attractive alternative to
the NAAFI. As usual 90th Entry Members soon became involved in organising many
of the activities on offer. David (Gerry) Southerton ran the Tape Recording Club
and served on the committee along with Tony Petter, John Gray and Paul Tuffery
who was fortunate to be selected to represent the Locking YMCA at the 1960
International YMCA Youth Conference in Hilversum, Holland. Paul chaired the
committee for two years. An annual highlight was the End of Term Concert which
featured Sketches performed by the committee, ‘Discomaniacs’ comedy mime with
Tony Petter, Magic from Padre Schofield ( a member of the International
Magicians Circle) and Music from Geordie Patterson, John Headland and John
Rickinson. For two years the debating team won the local heats and represented
Weston Super Mare and Axbridge in the National Public Speaking Competition. The
YMCA also had overnight accommodation which was very handy for visiting
parents/girlfriends and for Dave Wray and myself on the occasion of the very
first 90th reunion
